Review by Bob Hovey ★★★
Interesting, but a mixed bag ... there's a beautiful atmosphere and strong ecological theme (sourced from the 1932 fantasy novel by Kenji Miyazawa), but there are plot elements that lead in different directions and remain unresolved.
Guskou seems a nice enough fellow, but he is not developed strongly ... we know he's intelligent, persistent and courageous but he remains enigmatic and bland, to the point we never build the kind of emotional investment that's needed for a lead character.
The character animation (of anthropomorphic cats) is nicely done, and the background mattes and the 3D work on vehicles and buildings are truly spectacular... the overall look of this world commands your attention right from the opening shot (of trees reflected in water). This is the sort of film that will probably delight animation fans on a purely technical level in spite of story and character weaknesses.

Review by Ryan McSwain ★★★★½
The director of Night on the Galactic Railroad (1985) adapts another story from the legendary Kenji Miyazawa with the same big-eared anthropomorphic cats.
In this film, young Guskou Budor lives an idealistic life with his parents and sister until famine tears his life apart. On what might be a quest to find his missing sister, he ventures into the wide world and the worlds beyond.
This film has the quality and magic of a Studio Ghibli film, and it deserves the same level of recognition. If you love magical realism and breathtaking animation, this should be at the top of your list.
The English dub I saw has a few moments early on where the dialogue feels a little cheesy,…

Review by Sudar 😌 Manto ★★★
Kehidupan Guskuo Budori awalnya memang Ghibli-isme banget.

8th favourite film of the decade.
This is one of those films were everything in it is so bizarre and different that it's no wonder why people can't attach themselves to it. The film is based on a story with the same name by Kenji Miyazawa, a man who was a Japanese buddhist from the early 1900's, so the message and the tone is drastically different from what we expect from children's entertainment over here in the west. At the same time though it echoes works like Alice in Wonderland a little bit, with the oddities and strange characters Budori meets on his journey, that don't have an impact on the plot.
Some scenes are funny, some cute, some scary,…

The one star is for the animation. So fucking beautiful
The lack of the other stars is because this was BORING! It made NO SENSE and was way less interesting then the Railroad film. Why did the Giovanni-not-Giovanni character just.... completely lack motivation or care towards his family? So unrewarding, unrewarding ending, disjointed and not in a fun way
The evil cat was hot though

Review by Boing ★★★★★ 2
This is both a perfect thematic sequel to Night on the Galactic Railroad in every single way, and it works beautifully as its own standalone story to boot. Not only that, but the lessons learned from his previous films, plus the visual allusions to his past work make this a wonderful swan song for Gisaburō Sugii's entire filmography.

Review by Chilldebert ★★½
While the animation and background art is beautiful, The Life of Guskou Budori feels unfinished and incomplete.
Some episodes of Guskou's life were portrayed too long, others too short, there are a lot of unresolved plotlines and the ending seemed very strange and rushed. -
